Brex is hiring a Staff Software Engineer Product Data Platform in Vancouver!
Brex is hiring a staff-level backend engineer to shape the technical direction of its Product Data Platform team in Vancouver. The group builds the data, query, and search infrastructure behind core product experiences, including AI-driven and agentic reporting. This is a hybrid role combining long-range architectural strategy with hands-on work in the JVM ecosystem. The engineer will focus on the highest-impact problems across the data products organization, including gaps that span team boundaries, and will influence outcomes through expertise rather than formal authority.
Key responsibilities
- Set technical strategy for major platform initiatives, balancing durable architecture with near-term delivery across several teams.
- Diagnose and resolve systemic performance, consistency, and scalability issues, especially cross-team problems without a clear owner.
- Guide query architecture, including execution paths, query plans, cost models, indexing approaches, and schema design.
- Design distributed systems with deliberate tradeoffs around latency, consistency, caching, cost, and failure behavior.
- Elevate engineering quality through design reviews and architecture decisions, while contributing directly to production latency investigations and other high-stakes work.
- Anticipate scaling and reliability risks and turn them into plans the organization can support.
- Mentor senior engineers and help develop future technical leaders within the platform group.
- Contribute hands-on code and critical-path decisions, primarily using Kotlin and Java.
Key requirements
- 8+ years of backend engineering experience operating production systems at scale, including technical leadership on initiatives spanning multiple teams.
- Experience leading architecture and delivery for large distributed systems in a platform or infrastructure setting.
- Deep practical knowledge of relational databases, with Postgres or Aurora strongly preferred, including query plan analysis, indexing, and optimization.
- Ability to resolve ambiguous, cross-cutting problems without a predefined charter.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including influencing stakeholders and aligning teams without direct authority.
- Experience mentoring senior engineers.
- Seniority: Staff
- Work mode: Hybrid; minimum three coordinated office days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday), plus up to four fully remote weeks per year
- Salary: $240,000 - $300,000 CAD
- Key skills: Backend engineering, Distributed systems, Kotlin, Java, JVM, Postgres, Aurora, Query optimization, Indexing, Data platforms, Search infrastructure, OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Flink
