Okta is hiring a Senior Software Reliability Engineer to join its Data Platform organization in Toronto, working on the foundational services and data products that support streaming analytics, end-user reporting, telemetry, and the company's machine learning stack. The team builds high-volume, low-latency distributed systems on top of technologies such as Kinesis, Flink, ElasticSearch, and Snowflake, and this role carries a clear mandate from engineering leadership to establish Okta as a leader in applying data and ML to end-user security. The position blends platform engineering with reliability work: you will design and own data-intensive infrastructure, partner with architects and cross-functional teams on design and delivery, and keep production systems healthy through code review, performance tuning, and on-call incident response. Mentoring is also part of the job, as the team looks to grow the broader engineering organization. Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and take ownership of data-intensive, high-performance, scalable platform components
- Collaborate with engineering teams, architects, and cross-functional partners on project design and implementation
- Lead and participate in design reviews, code reviews, analysis, and performance tuning
- Coach and mentor engineers to help the organization scale
- Troubleshoot production issues across services and multiple layers of the stack
- Take part in the on-call rotation and incident management
Key requirements
- 3+ years of industry experience, including 2+ years with an object-oriented language, preferably Java
- Hands-on work with cloud-based distributed computing: messaging (Kinesis, Kafka), data processing (Flink, Spark, Beam), storage and compute (Snowflake, Databricks, Hadoop), and schedulers such as Kubernetes, Hadoop, or Mesos
- Experience developing and tuning highly scalable distributed systems
- Strong grasp of software engineering principles
- Solid understanding of multithreading, garbage collection, and memory management
- Reliability engineering experience covering data quality, data observability, and incident management
- Nice to have: security, encryption, identity, or authentication infrastructure; building mission-critical services on public clouds; petabyte-scale data integration in batch and online systems; contributions to distributed systems; Kubernetes-based services on AWS
