Clutch is hiring a Senior Data Scientist in Toronto!

Clutch, a Toronto-headquartered online used-car retailer founded in 2017 and backed by investors including Canaan, D1 Capital and Upper90, is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to join its data team and shape its financial services offering. The role is framed as a financing-first mandate: helping shoppers understand what they can afford earlier in the buying journey, feel more confident in their choices, and move from browsing to purchase with fewer surprises. Clutch describes this as an early-stage opportunity, with the hire acting as one of the first data scientists dedicated to the financial services workstream. The position is permanent, full-time and hybrid, based in Toronto, and the work is expected to be visible and directly tied to both customer experience and business outcomes. It begins analysis-heavy — mapping how customers engage with financing today, where they start, where they stall, and what helps them progress — before expanding into models, tools and experiments spanning pre-qualification through purchase. The successful candidate partners closely with financial services, product, marketing, engineering and external financing partners.

Key responsibilities

  • Build a deep analytical understanding of the financing funnel, including entry points, friction and drop-off
  • Define the roadmap and direction for Clutch's financing product as an early data scientist on the initiative
  • Develop models that surface realistically affordable vehicles and clarify monthly payments before customers commit
  • Predict financing intent and readiness from on-site browsing behaviour to deliver timely information
  • Own pre-qualification metrics end to end, from start rates through drop-off to downstream purchase impact
  • Model how down payment, trade-in value and loan term influence customer decisions, and build exploration tools for shoppers
  • Design and analyse experiments testing new ways of presenting financing across the site and purchase flow
  • Quantify financing's effect on conversion, order value and customer lifetime value, and recommend where to invest
  • Partner with data engineering and external financial services partners on data foundations and journey improvements to lift experience, conversion and risk performance

Key requirements

  • 5+ years as a data scientist or in a highly analytical role, with work that shaped real business decisions
  • Decision modelling experience — building models or frameworks that changed how customers are guided, what they see, or how a funnel performs
  • Strong SQL and Python, with comfort starting from messy data and ambiguous questions
  • Solid statistical fundamentals, experimentation experience and disciplined validation practices
  • A genuine customer mindset, caring about end-user impact rather than only the metric moved
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex trade-offs clearly and defend a point of view to business leaders
  • Nice to have: fintech, consumer finance or auto finance experience
  • Nice to have: e-commerce funnel, personalization or customer journey analytics background
  • Nice to have: experience deploying models to production
  • Nice to have: helping launch a new product or business line early on
  • Seniority: Senior
  • Work mode: Hybrid
  • Salary: $150,000 - $200,000 annually
  • Key skills: SQL, Python, statistics, experimentation, predictive modeling, decision modeling, customer journey analytics, data analysis
