Clutch, a Toronto-based online used-car retailer, is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help shape its financial services offering. The role begins with deep analysis of how customers engage with financing, then moves into building models, tools, and experiments that improve the journey from pre-qualification through purchase. You will sit on the data team and work closely with financial services, product, marketing, and engineering partners. This is a hybrid, full-time position focused on making affordability clearer earlier and reducing surprises for buyers.
Key responsibilities
- Study buyer-journey and financing-funnel data to find where customers start, stall, or move forward.
- Build models that support a financing-first shopping experience, including surfacing affordable vehicles and monthly payment clarity.
- Predict financing intent and readiness from on-site behavior to deliver timely information.
- Own pre-qualification analysis end to end, including starts, drop-off points, and downstream purchase effects.
- Model how down payment, trade-in value, and term choices influence customer decisions and build exploration tools.
- Design and analyze experiments that test new ways to present financing across the site and purchase flow.
- Quantify financing impact on conversion, order value, and customer lifetime value, then recommend where to invest.
- Partner with data engineering and external financial services partners on data foundations and journey improvements.
Key requirements
- 5+ years as a data scientist or in a highly analytical role with a record of influencing business decisions.
- Experience building decision models or frameworks that shaped customer guidance, presentation, or funnel optimization.
- Strong SQL and Python skills, with comfort working from messy data and ambiguous questions.
- Solid statistical fundamentals, experimentation experience, and disciplined validation practices.
- Customer-oriented perspective and excellent communication for explaining complex trade-offs to business leaders.
- Nice to have: fintech, consumer finance, or auto finance experience; e-commerce funnel, personalization, or journey analytics; production model deployment; early-stage product or business-line experience.
