Pinterest is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer II in Toronto!

Pinterest is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer II for its Toronto-based team, working on the recommendation and personalization systems that serve a platform with over 500 million users and hundreds of billions of saved ideas. This is a mid-level applied-ML role on small, high-ownership teams where engineers have direct access to massive behavioural datasets and ship large-scale recommendation work that reaches Pinners quickly. The position sits at the intersection of deep learning research and product delivery, with the chance to rotate across several surfaces rather than specialize narrowly. Pinterest notes that it uses AI tools in its hiring process and expects candidates to explain their reasoning clearly, including how they collaborate with AI. Compensation is listed at $170,840 to $220,840 CAD for Canadian applicants, and the role is posted as remote-friendly, with periodic in-person gatherings for collaboration. Relocation support is not offered.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and build deep learning and machine learning models that personalize the Pinterest experience
  • Collaborate with partner teams across product surfaces such as Homefeed, Ads, Growth, Shopping, and Search to run experiments and improve models
  • Apply data-driven methods and exploit unique data properties to strengthen candidate retrieval
  • Operate in a fast-paced setting with rapid experimentation cycles and frequent product launches
  • Track developments in recommendation systems and bring relevant advances into production work

Key requirements

  • At least two years of industry experience applying ML methods such as personalization, recommender systems, search, ranking, NLP, reinforcement learning, or graph representation learning
  • Hands-on end-to-end experience building data processing pipelines, large-scale ML systems, and big data tooling such as Hadoop or Spark
  • M.S. or PhD in machine learning or a closely related field
  • Expertise in scalable real-time systems that handle streaming data
  • Genuine enthusiasm for applied ML and for the Pinterest product
  • Nice to have: experience with AI coding assistants such as Cursor, Copilot, or Codex for development, debugging, testing, and refactoring
  • Nice to have: familiarity with LLM-based tools for documentation search, experiment analysis, and SQL or data exploration
  • Seniority: Mid-level (Engineer II)
  • Work mode: Remote-friendly, with periodic in-office collaboration
