Lyft is hiring a Intern Algorithms Summer 2027 Toronto in Toronto!
Lyft's Toronto office is recruiting graduate-level Data Science interns for Summer 2027, with openings across three specialty tracks: optimization, machine learning, and inference. The team builds the mathematical and statistical models that drive the ride-hailing platform's core systems, spanning pricing, dispatch, incentives, mapping, and forecasting — a broader problem space than most companies of comparable scale. Interns report to a Science Manager and work alongside engineers and product managers to translate business questions into formal mathematical framings, run experiments, and ship modeling code into production. Candidates must be enrolled in a Master's or PhD program at a Canadian university and be on track to graduate between December 2027 and June 2028. The role is hybrid, requiring at least three days per week in the office (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays), and pays an hourly base rate in the mid-forties. This is a fast-paced, collaborative research environment suited to students who enjoy applied mathematical problem-solving on large-scale marketplace data.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other cross-functional partners to frame problems mathematically and in business terms
- Conduct exploratory data analysis to build understanding of the underlying problem
- Write production-quality modeling code and partner with software engineers to deploy algorithms
- Design and execute simulated and live-traffic experiments
- Analyze experimental and observational data, present findings to partner teams, and support launch decisions
Key requirements
- Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD at a university in Canada, in mathematical sciences (operations research, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, theoretical physics, behavioral science, electrical engineering), economics (microeconomic theory, econometrics), data engineering, or a related field
- Graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028
- Availability for a Summer 2027 internship in Toronto
- Programming experience in Python (required), plus SQL or R
- Familiarity with standard data science libraries such as NumPy, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Keras, and ML/NLP tooling such as SpaCy and NLTK
- Background in experimental design and analysis, and exploratory data analysis
- Demonstrated depth in one area: optimization and mathematical modeling, machine learning fundamentals, or probabilistic and statistical modeling
- Bonus: exposure to marketplace design, ridesharing, two-sided marketplaces, or transportation
- Seniority: Internship (Master's/PhD student)
- Work mode: Hybrid — at least 3 days per week in office (Mon, Wed, Thu)
- Salary: CAD $45 - $48 per hour
- Key skills: Python, SQL, R, NumPy, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, SpaCy, NLTK, Optimization, Mathematical Modeling, Machine Learning, Statistical Modeling, Experimental Design
