Pinterest is hiring a remote Staff Software Engineer!

Pinterest is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to own the data systems behind infrastructure usage and cost visibility. The team builds the pipelines, models, and services that let engineering and finance groups understand what infrastructure is being consumed, who owns it, and how it maps to budgets and planning. This is a hands-on individual-contributor position with real technical leadership weight: you would shape direction and roadmap, untangle ambiguous cross-team problems, and push the org's engineering standards upward through design review and mentorship. Pinterest frames AI fluency as part of the job rather than a side interest — the role explicitly expects engineers to use AI tooling to move faster while independently verifying outputs against source data and production evidence. The posting lists remote work with an expectation of gathering in person once or twice a month, so candidates should be based somewhere in the country and comfortable with occasional travel. No relocation support is offered.

Key responsibilities

  • Define technical direction and contribute to the roadmap for infrastructure data products that need to scale reliably
  • Build and operate production ingestion and transformation pipelines, data models, and services covering usage, cost, ownership, and planning data
  • Harden shared data products with explicit contracts, automated quality checks, reconciliation logic, documentation, and operational monitoring
  • Drive ambiguous, multi-team initiatives from problem framing and trade-off analysis through launch and adoption
  • Raise engineering quality across the team via mentorship and design reviews
  • Apply AI tooling to investigate data-quality and pipeline incidents, speed up implementation and documentation, and help partner teams self-serve infrastructure insights — validating results against source systems each time
  • Protect sensitive data and stay accountable for final deliverables rather than deferring to AI output

Key requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Substantial background designing, building, and running production data systems or data-heavy services at scale
  • Strong Python and SQL engineering skills, with a habit of shipping tested, maintainable code
  • Depth in ingestion, large-scale ETL and transformation, data modeling, and workflow orchestration
  • Experience defining data interfaces and contracts and improving freshness, completeness, and consistency
  • Proven record leading complex technical work across team boundaries, from ambiguous framing through delivery and ongoing operation
  • Ability to influence through technical judgment and clear communication, and to mentor other engineers
  • Operational experience with testing, monitoring, and incident response for data pipelines or services
  • Familiarity with AWS or comparable cloud environments
  • Demonstrated use of AI to improve speed and quality at work, plus strong critical evaluation and verification of AI-assisted output
  • High integrity and ownership around sensitive data
  • Nice to have: infrastructure cost or usage data, budgeting, shared data platforms, dbt, data lineage, hierarchical ownership modeling, or cloud-native multi-tenant platforms at internet scale
  • Seniority: Staff
  • Work mode: Remote, with in-office collaboration 1-2 times per month
  • Salary: $177,185 - $364,795 USD (US-based applicants only)
  • Key skills: Python, SQL, ETL, Data modeling, Workflow orchestration, Data quality and contracts, AWS, Data pipelines, Monitoring and incident response, Mentorship, AI-assisted development, dbt, Data lineage, Infrastructure cost data
