Samsara is hiring a remote Staff ML Engineer Edge AI!
Samsara, a public company focused on connected operations and IoT, is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for its AI team in Canada. This remote role centres on bringing AI capabilities to edge devices, where compute, memory, and latency constraints shape how models are designed, trained, optimized, and shipped. The engineer will work with very large volumes of operational data, including sensor readings, video, diagnostics, text, and location information, and will help turn customer and business needs into clear technical problems. The position combines hands-on technical leadership with cross-functional collaboration across ML, firmware, full-stack, product, and customer-facing teams. Beyond immediate product work, the engineer is expected to explore emerging research and prototype new AI experiences that can improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability for industries such as transportation, construction, agriculture, and manufacturing. Coaching and mentoring other ML engineers is also part of the role. The listing states travel of up to 5% and no relocation assistance. Annual base salary is listed as $170,400 to $234,300 CAD, with equity and variable pay possible under company plans.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of AI product work that runs on edge devices.
- Build both near-term production solutions and longer-range research prototypes.
- Work with petabyte-scale operational data spanning sensors, video, diagnostics, text, and location.
- Collaborate with teams across the business to identify and test new AI experiences.
- Improve model performance under edge compute constraints.
- Track academic and industry advances and apply relevant techniques to Samsara’s needs.
- Mentor and coach ML engineers and communicate technical decisions to varied audiences.
- Model Samsara’s cultural principles while supporting global growth.
Key requirements
- 8 or more years of experience as a machine learning engineer.
- Demonstrated strength in optimizing ML models and systems for edge compute limitations.
- Programming ability in Python or a similar language.
- Programming ability in C++ or Rust.
- Strong understanding of the iterative ML product development lifecycle.
- Experience developing and shipping production code at large scale.
- Ability to turn ambiguous customer or business needs into crisp problem definitions.
- Clear written and verbal communication with technical peers and leadership.
- Experience coaching and mentoring ML engineers.
