Twilio is hiring a remote Staff Machine Learning Engineer!
Twilio is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join its AI/ML Platform team, working remotely from Ontario, British Columbia, or Alberta. The role sits at the centre of Twilio's company-wide AI foundation: building the shared tooling, ML/LLM operations practices, and evaluation standards that support intelligent engagement products across the business. This is a hands-on builder position rather than a pure architecture or people-management role — the successful candidate is expected to own technically ambitious systems end to end, move quickly under ambiguous 0-to-1 conditions, and keep quality high through rigorous offline and online evaluation of non-deterministic AI features. The team also focuses on making LLM workloads easier to run and manage at scale, while giving product teams simple, compliant access to data for AI/ML exploration. Twilio is remote-first, though occasional travel may be required for team off-sites, functional gatherings, or customer meetings.
Key responsibilities
- Research and implement state-of-the-art LLM inference and orchestration approaches
- Identify where smaller language models can replace larger ones through fine-tuning and distillation
- Design ML systems that remain reliable and performant at Twilio's operating scale
- Define standards and build tooling for evaluating a broad range of AI/ML capabilities
- Adopt and integrate current AI development stacks to reduce boilerplate and focus effort on differentiating work
- Pick up new technical skills quickly in a fast-moving, high-delivery environment
- Partner closely with teammates across the organization and communicate technical direction clearly
Key requirements
- 8+ years of applied ML/AI experience, including end-to-end ownership of ambitious systems rather than contributing to another engineer's design
- Comfort with ambiguous, 0-to-1 problem spaces and a strong bias for action
- Proficiency in Python
- Experience building cloud services on AWS, GCP, or Azure, handling high-volume data, streaming or real-time inference paths, and varied data stores
- Solid grounding in statistical machine learning, transformer models, and LLMs
- Extensive ML Ops and LLM Ops experience, including designing rigorous evaluation metrics for non-deterministic AI features at scale
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Seniority: Staff
- Work mode: Remote (Ontario, British Columbia, or Alberta; occasional travel)
- Salary: $160,320 - $200,400 CAD, plus 12.5% target bonus
- Key skills: Python, LLM inference and orchestration, Fine-tuning and distillation, ML Ops, LLM Ops, Evaluation design, AWS, GCP, Azure, Transformer models, Statistical machine learning, Streaming and real-time inference, AI-assisted development tools
