Twilio is hiring a remote Staff Machine Learning Engineer!

Twilio is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join its AI/ML Platform team, building the shared foundation and tooling that supports intelligent, AI-driven customer engagement products across the company. The role is remote and based in Ontario, British Columbia, or Alberta, with occasional travel for team gatherings and customer meetings. This is a hands-on, senior individual-contributor position focused on the full lifecycle of ML and LLM systems: inference and orchestration, fine-tuning and distillation of smaller models, and evaluation practices that keep non-deterministic AI features reliable at Twilio's scale. The team wants someone who can move fluidly between research, production experimentation, and enterprise-quality software, and who is comfortable shaping standards rather than inheriting them.

Key responsibilities

  • Research and implement state-of-the-art LLM inference and orchestration approaches
  • Identify where fine-tuning or distillation of small language models can replace heavier approaches
  • Design and build ML systems that perform reliably at Twilio-scale volumes
  • Define standards and shared tooling for evaluating a broad range of AI/ML capabilities, both offline and online
  • Move quickly in a high-delivery environment, picking up new technical skills as needed
  • Adopt and integrate current AI development stacks to reduce boilerplate and concentrate effort on differentiated work
  • Help shape the direction of the company-wide ML/AI Ops platform and ensure compliant, easy access to data for exploration and product development

Key requirements

  • 8+ years of applied ML/AI experience, including end-to-end ownership of ambitious systems rather than contributing to another person's design
  • Comfort with 0-to-1 work, ambiguous requirements, and a strong bias toward action
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Experience building cloud services on AWS, GCP, or Azure, including high-volume data, streaming or real-time inference paths, and varied data stores
  • Solid grounding in statistical machine learning, transformer models, and LLMs
  • Extensive ML Ops and LLM Ops experience, including rigorous evaluation metrics for non-deterministic AI features at scale
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor
  • Nice to have: evaluation work for autonomous agents and LLMs, multi-turn agent systems with long-term context, distributed team experience, and visible technical leadership through open source, talks, papers, or blogs
  • Seniority: Staff
  • Work mode: Remote (Ontario, British Columbia, or Alberta, Canada)
  • Salary: $160,320 - $200,400
  • Key skills: Python, LLM inference and orchestration, Fine-tuning and distillation, ML Ops, LLM Ops, Evaluation design, AWS/GCP/Azure, Transformer models, Statistical machine learning, AI-assisted development tools, Collaboration
