Pinterest is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer within Pinterest Labs and its Applied Science group. This is a senior, technically influential role focused on advancing how content is discovered across Pinterest by developing generative recommendation systems and reinforcement learning approaches at production scale. The engineer will combine applied research with architecture and deployment, working alongside research scientists and ML engineers and partnering with product, engineering, and data science teams. The position is remote anywhere in the country, with in-person collaboration expected one to two times per quarter, and relocation support is not offered. The base salary range is 227,871 to 469,147 USD, with equity also available.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct applied AI and machine learning research relevant to ads, discovery, growth, and search.
- Scope, architect, build, and launch novel machine learning solutions from early research through large-scale production deployment.
- Set timelines, secure resources, and provide technical leadership for ambitious applied AI initiatives.
- Develop long-term research strategy and identify new opportunities through internal and external collaboration.
- Translate complex technical work into product impact by partnering with product, engineering, and data science teams.
- Mentor others and contribute to external research collaborations and publications.
Key requirements
- MS or PhD in computer science, or comparable industry experience.
- At least six years of relevant industry experience.
- Hands-on work with large-scale recommendation systems and reinforcement learning applications.
- Experience providing technical leadership and moving ambiguous research problems into production deliverables.
- Publication record at top machine learning conferences such as KDD, NeurIPS, or RecSys.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.
- LLM or VLM post-training experience is considered an asset.
