Pinterest is hiring a remote Sr. ML Engineer Applied Science!

Pinterest is hiring a senior machine learning engineer for the visual modeling team within Pinterest Labs, the group responsible for applied ML research across computer vision, multimodal representation learning, graph neural networks, generative modeling, and recommender systems. This particular opening sits on the small core pod behind Pinterest Canvas, an in-house foundation text-to-image model that powers visualization, inpainting, and outpainting products. The engineer will work hands-on with Pinterest's large visual-text dataset, prototyping architectures that ship to production, while collaborating closely with a roughly six-person engineering group and a product prototyping team. Because the pod is small, members also contribute to the multimodal text and image embeddings used to condition the generative model, so the work spans both foundational representation learning and applied generative product features. The position is listed as remote, with staff gathering for in-person collaboration once or twice per quarter, and no relocation support is offered. Compensation includes a base salary plus equity.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and prototype new model architectures for Pinterest Canvas, the internal text-to-image generative model
  • Read research literature, join group discussions, and contribute to the company's overall visual generative strategy
  • Assemble relevant visual training data, including data for RLHF and targeted fine-tuning work
  • Publish and promote results through conference submissions, blog posts, and other public channels
  • Mentor junior researchers and research interns within Pinterest Labs
  • Collaborate on core multimodal text and image embeddings that condition the generative model

Key requirements

  • 5+ years of industry computer vision experience
  • M.S. or PhD in machine learning, computer science, or a closely related field
  • Hands-on work with generative computer vision models, ideally diffusion-based approaches
  • Ability to implement models independently rather than only tuning existing frameworks
  • Comfort operating as a research engineer or scientist in a small, collaborative team
  • Seniority: Senior
  • Work mode: Remote (quarterly in-person collaboration; no relocation assistance)
  • Salary: $161,263 — $332,012 USD
  • Key skills: Diffusion models, Text-to-image generation, Computer vision, Model architecture prototyping, Multimodal representation learning, RLHF, Fine-tuning, Research publication, Mentorship
