Affirm is hiring a remote Senior Software Engineer!
Affirm is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join its Growth Platform Engineering team, which builds the backend systems behind customer acquisition, engagement, and lifecycle growth. The role centres on designing scalable services, APIs, and data models that support personalized communications, experimentation, and large-scale messaging reaching millions of customers across thousands of merchants. It is a cross-functional position that pairs hands-on backend engineering with product judgment, and the successful candidate will help set technical direction while mentoring less experienced engineers. The position is remote-first, but applicants must reside in one of nine specified Canadian provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan). The team also expects this engineer to take part in operational duties, including on-call rotation and keeping services healthy.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and prioritize projects using data-driven judgment that balances product, technical, and business objectives
- Design and build scalable backend systems, APIs, and data models supporting communications, experimentation, and personalization
- Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and Analysts to define and execute acquisition and engagement strategies
- Establish engineering best practices so services remain secure, observable, and performant at scale
- Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of learning and collaboration
- Own operational health of team artifacts through metrics, escalation, and on-call support
Key requirements
- 6+ years of software engineering experience focused on backend systems
- Strong grasp of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture, including tradeoffs in scalability, reliability, and maintainability
- Proven record shipping complex backend systems to production
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including proficiency in design docs and technical specs
- Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration with Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Design
- Proficiency in Python, Kotlin, or similar languages; experience with both is an asset
- Experience with AWS or another major cloud provider
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
- Experience with experimentation platforms such as A/B testing or feature flagging systems
- Familiarity with event-driven architecture and stream processing tools such as Kafka or Kinesis
- Exposure to large-scale personalization, recommendation, or messaging systems
