Pinterest is hiring a remote Principal Engineer Big Data Platform!

Pinterest is hiring a Principal Engineer to set the technical direction for the data infrastructure that underpins its large-scale big data and AI workloads. This is a senior individual-contributor leadership role on a platform serving exabytes of data, where the successful candidate will shape strategy, architecture, and long-term roadmaps for the compute and scheduling layers that internal teams depend on for mission-critical applications. The position is open to candidates anywhere in the country, with the expectation of gathering in an office for in-person collaboration roughly one to two times per quarter; relocation support is not offered. The team works heavily with open-source big data and machine learning technologies, and the role combines deep systems engineering with org-wide influence — advising partners across the company on how data should be processed and stored more reliably and efficiently at scale. Compensation includes a base salary range plus equity, with the posted range applying to US-based applicants.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the strategy and technical direction for the data infrastructure powering big data and AI applications
  • Design, build, and scale frameworks for processing petabyte-scale datasets, spanning compute engines, job and resource management, scheduling, and remote shuffling
  • Partner with internal customers to support critical business use cases that depend on the data platform
  • Serve as a thought leader across the company on more reliable, faster, and more efficient processing and storage of data at scale
  • Help define and drive the team's technical vision and long-term roadmap

Key requirements

  • 12+ years of industry experience with a demonstrated record of technical excellence
  • 8+ years building and supporting large-scale Kubernetes or big data platforms
  • Deep familiarity with big data and ML tooling such as Flink, Spark, Presto, Kubernetes, Ray, and PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • Proficiency in at least one of Java, Go, Scala, or Python
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and AWS technologies
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, including comfort with ambiguity, tradeoff decisions, and keeping stakeholders aligned on priorities and progress
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Seniority: Principal
  • Work mode: Remote (in-office collaboration 1-2 times per quarter)
  • Salary: $242,634 - $499,541 USD base, plus equity (US-based applicants)
  • Key skills: Flink, Spark, Presto, Kubernetes, Ray, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Java, Go, Scala, Python, AWS, big data platform engineering, resource management and scheduling
