Pinterest is hiring a remote ML Engineer II Visual AI!

Pinterest is hiring an ML Engineer II to join the visual modeling team inside Pinterest Labs, the group responsible for applied machine learning research across computer vision, multimodal representation learning, generative modeling, graph neural networks, and recommender systems. This particular team is building vision-language models that can perceive fine visual detail and reason about user aesthetics, powering experiences such as multimodal search and text-to-image generation. You would sit in a core visual pod of roughly six engineers working alongside a product prototyping team, using Pinterest's distinctive visual-text datasets to train large-scale generative models and ship them to production. The role is research-heavy but production-oriented, and the team expects members to contribute openly to the wider ML community through papers, conference talks, and blog posts. It is a remote position open to candidates anywhere in the country, with the expectation of gathering in the office for collaborative sessions once or twice per quarter. Relocation support is not offered.

Key responsibilities

  • Prototype and iterate on new model architectures for Pinterest's vision-language models, including hands-on fine-tuning of open-source LLMs to strengthen visual perception and tool-use abilities
  • Design new evaluation benchmarks that target vision-centric capabilities, such as fashion style recommendations
  • Survey current research, join group discussions, and contribute to the company's overall visual generative strategy
  • Assist in curating relevant visual training data for Pinterest Canvas, including data work supporting RLHF and targeted fine-tuning
  • Publish and publicize findings through conference submissions, papers, and blog posts

Key requirements

  • Research engineering or research science background with experience in generative computer vision models, ideally visual encoders and LLMs
  • At least two years of industry computer vision experience
  • M.S. or PhD in machine learning, computer science, or a closely related field
  • Nice to have: publications at top ML conferences
  • Nice to have: fluency with AI coding assistants such as Cursor, Copilot, or Codex for development, debugging, testing, and refactoring
  • Nice to have: comfort using LLM-powered tooling for documentation search, experiment analysis, SQL and data exploration, and general workflow acceleration
  • Seniority: Mid-level (ML Engineer II)
  • Work mode: Remote, with in-office collaboration 1-2 times per quarter
  • Salary: $138,905 - $285,982 USD base, plus equity
  • Key skills: computer vision, vision-language models, LLM fine-tuning, generative modeling, RLHF, evaluation benchmark design, multimodal search, text-to-image models, AI coding assistants, Python
