Pinterest is hiring a remote ML Engineer II Responsible AI!
Pinterest is hiring an ML Engineer II for its Responsible AI team, a horizontal group within the Advanced Technologies Group that works across the company on fairness, safety, and alignment of machine learning systems. The team's mandate covers generative AI evaluation and mitigation, ML fairness tooling, and inclusive product features — past examples include skin tone, hair pattern, and body type search refinements. This is an applied role rather than a purely research one: the goal is measurable impact on business metrics, with publication at applied ML conferences treated as a secondary outlet. The engineer will partner with trust and safety, user modeling, and content understanding teams to spread responsible AI practices, help set technical direction alongside senior leaders, and mentor more junior engineers. Pinterest describes the environment as large-scale and multi-modal, working with image, text, and graph signals across a platform serving more than 535 million monthly users, so candidates should be comfortable with real-time interactive systems. The position is open to candidates anywhere in the country, though the team gathers for in-person collaboration roughly one to two times per quarter, and relocation support is not offered. Compensation includes a base salary band plus equity.
Key responsibilities
- Execute on responsible AI projects that identify, avoid, and mitigate bias across a broad range of ML applications, including generative AI.
- Partner with engineering teams such as trust and safety, user modeling, and content understanding to reuse their platforms and signals and drive adoption of Responsible AI practices and fairness tooling company-wide.
- Mentor junior engineers on the Responsible AI team and elsewhere in the organization on fairness and responsible AI topics.
- Work with team members and senior leaders to define and drive technical strategy for the responsible AI space.
Key requirements
- Substantial hands-on experience applying advanced ML methods to production systems, with a demonstrated record in responsible technology spanning fairness, ethics, and societal impact.
- Deep familiarity with modern ML architectures — transformer-based models, two-tower architectures, LLMs — and how they are used in large-scale search and recommender systems.
- Proven ability to measure, deploy, and iterate on fairness interventions and responsible AI solutions at scale, connecting research to product outcomes.
- At least two years of experience on engineering teams building large-scale, ML-driven, user-facing products.
- A Master's or PhD in computer science or a related field.
- Nice to have: publications at top ML conferences; experience with AI coding assistants such as Cursor, Copilot, or Codex; familiarity with LLM-powered tools for documentation search, experiment analysis, or SQL and data exploration; expertise in scalable real-time stream-processing systems; genuine enthusiasm for applied research and the Pinterest product.
- Seniority: Mid-level (Engineer II)
- Work mode: Remote, anywhere in the country, with in-office collaboration 1-2 times per quarter
- Salary: $138,905 - $285,982 USD base, plus equity
- Key skills: Responsible AI, ML fairness and bias mitigation, Generative AI alignment and evaluation, Large language models, Transformer architectures, Two-tower models, Recommender systems, Search systems, Large-scale production ML, Mentorship, Technical strategy, Real-time stream processing
