Samsara is hiring a remote Data Engineer!
Samsara, a publicly traded company behind a cloud platform for connected physical operations, is hiring a Data Engineer for its cross-functional Data team, which brings together data scientists, analysts, and engineers. The position is remote and open to candidates living anywhere in Canada, with no relocation support offered. The engineer's core mandate is owning the pipelines that feed the company's analytics data model — turning raw telemetry from IoT devices and product usage into reliable, well-structured tables that support causal inference, machine learning training, and dashboards. Because the downstream consumers sit across data science, analytics, and AI/ML groups, the work calls for someone who values correctness, uptime, and clear communication as much as technical throughput. Samsara frames the role around its mission of improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability in industries such as transportation, construction, agriculture, and manufacturing, and it expects the engineer to model its cultural principles while the company continues scaling internationally. Compensation includes an annual base salary range of $110,500 to $143,000 CAD depending on location and experience, plus an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff and performance-linked refresh opportunities.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain dependable computed tables that combine video and audio data, sensor and product telemetry, and customer metadata
- Assemble and transform source data from connected devices and software products into the central data lake using SparkSQL and PySpark
- Pull in external datasets and join them with internal sources for enrichment and analysis
- Own pipeline reliability and uptime, including customer-facing datasets with strict quality expectations
- Read and work alongside backend application code to understand upstream data producers
- Coordinate with data scientists, analytics staff, AI/ML teams, and other engineers so downstream use cases have trustworthy inputs
- Use orchestration tooling to schedule and monitor recurring jobs, and manage changes through Git-based version control
- Act as a steward of Samsara's cultural principles as the team and company expand
Key requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, statistics, or a comparable field
- At least four years in a data engineering capacity
- Proven track record designing data models that operate at scale
- Hands-on experience constructing ETL pipelines over high-volume datasets
- Working knowledge of Spark-based platforms
- Fluency with at least one orchestration framework such as Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect
- Strong SQL and Python skills, plus comfort consuming REST APIs
- Grounding in software engineering practice, including reading backend code and using Git or GitHub
- Nice to have: time series and late-arriving data experience, Databricks, Delta Lake, Dagster, public cloud exposure (AWS, GCP, Azure), first-party product data models, and familiarity with ML outputs or client-side signals
- Seniority: Mid-level (4+ years)
- Work mode: Remote (Canada)
- Salary: $110,500 – $143,000 CAD
- Key skills: PySpark, SparkSQL, SQL, Python, ETL, Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, REST APIs, Git, Databricks, Delta Lake, time series data, AWS/GCP/Azure
