Pinterest is hiring a remote Core Data Science!
Pinterest is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Core Data Science organization, a role focused on raising both the quality and the speed of data science work across the company. Rather than building consumer features directly, this engineer creates the data foundations, pipelines and internal tooling that other teams rely on, and leads a team of analytics engineers who partner closely with data scientists and product engineering. The position is listed as remote, though the successful candidate should expect to come into an office for in-person collaboration roughly once or twice a month, and no relocation support is offered. Pinterest frames AI fluency as central to the job: candidates should be comfortable using AI to accelerate analysis and prototyping while still verifying outputs with rigour and sound judgement.
Key responsibilities
- Mentor and lead a diverse team of analytics engineers, modelling an inclusive working culture
- Define and promote best practices for instrumentation and experimentation, and communicate them to product engineering teams
- Prototype AI-assisted tools and analysis pipelines that deliver insight at scale, while building deep familiarity with data structures and metrics
- Use AI to speed up analysis, pipeline drafting, documentation and QA, applying manual checks to confirm correctness
- Build self-service tooling and processes so data scientists and engineers can access key datasets and investigate metrics independently
- Maintain thorough documentation of tools and datasets, and drive strategy for data quality and democratization
- Partner with product managers, engineers, designers and researchers to translate findings into concrete product decisions
Key requirements
- Six or more years working with data in a fast-moving, data-driven setting
- Fluency in SQL or comparable database languages plus Python or R, including nested data, window functions, query optimization and partitioning
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration, ETL/ELT on very large and complex datasets, and DAG dependency management
- Proven record of delivering analytics solutions to existing teams and scoping open-ended goals into defined objectives
- Comfort partnering with cross-functional leadership to turn insight into action, and initiative in spotting opportunities amid competing priorities
- Demonstrated use of AI to improve day-to-day speed and quality, with strong habits around testing, source-checking, validation and peer review
- High integrity and ownership over sensitive data and final deliverables
- Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in computer science, statistics, mathematics or a related quantitative field, or equivalent experience
- Nice to have: automation, anomaly detection, infrastructure or workflow optimization, and internal tooling for engineering velocity
- Seniority: Staff
- Work mode: Remote (in-office 1-2 times per month)
- Salary: $177,185 - $364,795 USD (US-based applicants only)
- Key skills: SQL, Python, R, ETL/ELT, Workflow orchestration, DAG dependencies, Experiment instrumentation, Data quality, Data democratization, AI-assisted analysis, Internal tooling, Analytics engineering leadership
